Essia Jaïbi is a director, playwright and producer. After finishing her studies in Paris and gaining several experiences in Europe, Essia came back to Tunis in 2017 fully devoted to creation within and beyond the walls. She was selected by the Rolex “Mentor and Protégé” program in 2019 and invited by the Sundance Institute in 2020, and is building, thereafter, both national and international collaborations.
Through her research, experiments and creations, she always provocatively sometimes insolently questions the complexes and complexities of Tunisian society as well as the aspirations of a generation in quest of identity, answers and experiences. Her choices focus on delicate subjects, often hidden or concealed; such as the family unit and its taboos, questions of gender and sexual identity, women’s rights and the visibility of minorities and their struggles.

Today, when we do theater in a country like Tunisia, we of course need to make people dream, but above all to give them keys to understanding certain subjects that are not discussed elsewhere, neither in the media, nor in schools, nor within families. Theater can and must do this.”
